In order to be successful this season, Anthem Boulder Creek will need to overcome a pesky foe that has consistently had its number in recent years.

Not any of its upcoming opponents, although Phoenix Sandra Day O'Connor, Surprise Willow Canyon and the rest of the Class 5A Division II Northwest Region will certainly provide a challenge.

Boulder Creek's nemesis is one that it couldn't beat in 2008 and 2009 no matter how many points it scored.

Injuries.

Two years ago, star quarterback Taylor Davis sprained his ankle in the final minutes of the team's first round playoff win over Willow Canyon. Davis hobbled through the quarterfinal against Avondale Westview, which Boulder Creek lost 35-10.

Last season, coach Dan Friedman said the team suffered through a series of ACL injuries, including a costly one to running back Phillip Bayus halfway through the year.

Boulder Creek succumbed again to Westview in the playoffs, this time in the first round, 35-17.

"Maybe I'm snakebit," Friedman said. "Because wherever I go I seem to get some major injuries."

Whether that's the case or not, health may well be what determines how Boulder Creek's 2010 campaign turns out. Because if its players can avoid the training room for the most part, it has the chance to do some damage.

Junior quarterback Trevor Bonifasi returns with a full season of varsity experience under his belt, Bayus is fully recovered from his injury and the guy who filled in for him last season, senior Mike Contreras, is ready to once again team up to form a potent one-two punch in the backfield.

"We've got some great experience coming back," Friedman said. "The kids have been working real hard, and we think we're headed in the right direction right now."

Boulder Creek will need to be ready from the beginning, as its first two opponents of 2010 are Phoenix Pinnacle and Scottsdale Chaparral, teams that went a combined 21-3 and grabbed the second and third seeds in the 5A-II playoffs last year.

"They're tough-as-nails games," Friedman said. "So we're going to be tested very early to see where we're at."

And then he echoed what must be a familiar refrain by now.

"We just need to pray for health."

Three questions about this year's team:

How is this year's team different from last year's? We're more mature. That's the biggest thing. They understand football and they've really come together as a team.

The team will succeed if . . . we stay healthy. Injuries have kind of taken a toll on us the last couple of years.

What is the biggest asset you have on the team? My assistant coaches. I've got six assistants on the varsity level that just live and breathe football. They love working with kids and want to put our kids in a position to be successful.
